Description
This is the inaugural release from what is shaping up to be one of Paso Robles most interesting estates: Pius. Founded by Anthony Versochi, Pius is about making super-premium wines in this beautiful part of California. Anthony knows a thing or two of winemaking at this level - the previous item on his portfolio was head winemaker for DAOU Estate & Winery.
Having moved to making his own wines, he's taking the freedom to experiment with winemaking technique. and this is inaugural release shows that. A Cabernet that is distinctly his own, it's a stupendously easy-to-love glass with real character and obvious craftsmanship. Anthony uses intensive heat control to carefully finesse the tannins and acidities. This has left a wine with superb balance and poise, weight and richness.
Pius has had very little press coverage sofar – just one critical review. This will change later this year when the other five or six wines he has in the barrel are released; we anticipate great things!
95 Points "Very dark in the glass, this showers the nose with complex aromas of dark cocoa, black olive, peppercorn, tar, espresso and mint. There's a creamy and focused cassis kick to the sip, but it's the slightly bitter coffee and charred earth aspects that are most compelling." Matt Kettmann from Wine Enthusiast
