Description

The windswept Cypress tree, an unmistakable icon of California’s Central Coast, owes its twisted and gnarled appearance to the maritime air’s persistent movement and flow. The ocean’s influence on the region is significant, cooling down local valleys at night, and preserving the grape’s natural acidity and flavor. The 2021 vintage experienced generous preseason rainfall during the month of January but an especially dry winter and spring followed. The dry conditions forced vines to produce small but exceptionally concentrated berries. Our Cypress Vineyards’ Merlot showcases wonderful cherry and currant flavors against a light oak background and medium tannins. Distinct varietal aromas of black cherry and red currant. The red fruit signature is reminiscent of a classic claret, with its comfortable palate weight and bright finish. This wine is a perfect pairing with grilled kabobs or barbecued short ribs. Enjoy in its youth, or cellar up to five years.

J Lohr was founded in 1973 by the eponymous Jerry, who originally looked at the cool and windblown Monterrey coast. Fairly quickly building a successful business with the lovely terroir there in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, he expanded to Paso in a search for a place to grow truly great Cabernet. And, with no doubt - he found it. Founding the Hilltop Vineyard pretty quickly, they expanded rapidly off the back of the quality of Paso Robles fruit and the exceptional quality of the wines they were producing. Nowadays this is one of USA's favourite wineries - not requiring pretence or shouting to show how damn good it is. This is a Cellar's favourite across the board, with the Seven Oaks and the Riverstone proving firm favourites amongst our customers.
